October Mailing to Families

Two Week EMAIL TO TEACHERS

Good morning,

We hope your first two weeks of instruction have been productive and energizing as you begin building community and establishing classroom norms. As we move further into the first marking period, please review the following key expectations:

Identify Proficiency Goals

Each teacher should identify the key proficiencies or skills students are expected to master for this marking period. These should be specific, measurable, and guide your instruction and assessment planning. Collaborating with your content team can help ensure alignment and clarity.

Google Classroom Consistency

All assignments, materials, and relevant resources must be posted and accessible through Google Classroom. This helps all students stay on track and provides families with the ability to support learning at home.

Maintain an Updated Gradebook

Your gradebook should be updated regularly, whether you’re using Google Classroom or the NYCPS grading platform. Frequent updates promote transparency, allow for early intervention, and support student accountability.

Transitions

All staff are expected to greet students at the door of your classroom at the start of each period. This practice builds relationships, sets a positive tone, and helps with hallway clearance.

Bathroom Pass Protocol

  • Students must have a hallway pass to leave your room.
  • Only one student at a time may leave your classroom.
  • No passes should be issued during the first or last 5 minutes of class, unless absolutely necessary.
  • If a student is out of class for an extended time, please notify a hallway monitor immediately for follow-up.

Parent Engagement Time

In alignment with the 2023 UFT contract, the required time for parent engagement has increased to 55 minutes per week. This time is self-directed, may be conducted remotely, and can be spread out across the week. You have the flexibility to complete this engagement at times that work best for you outside of the school day. A subsequent email will be sent to teachers and paraprofessionals who have not yet recorded their outreach in the document.

If a student is falling behind, inform the parents of opportunities to make up work such as attending WIN. If you’ve been unable to contact a family member, please notify the student’s counselor. You can raise this during:

  • A grade team meeting
  • A one-on-one check-in
  • Or by sending a quick email

Thank you for your continued commitment to a strong and structured start to the school year. Your consistency and care make a significant difference in our students’ experience. If you have any questions or need assistance implementing any of the above, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
